Retention of Girls in School

In 2014 the Ministry of Education and Sports issued a statement requiring all schools to provide adequate emergency menstrual hygiene management facilities for girls to reduce absenteeism and school dropout. ELECU was selected by the Ministry of Education and Sports as a key actor in menstrual hygiene management and supported the organization of a regional conference on Management of Menstrual Hygiene (MHM) and coordinating stakeholders to understand and build capacity in MHM.

Key interventions for MHM

  • Engaged communities in dialogues around children’s education through Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) training specifically on making and use of re-usable menstrual pads in order to improve retention and academic performance
  • ELECU trained senior women/men teachers and other actors in Menstrual Hygiene Management
  • Contributed to the Menstrual Hygiene Management Charter through the Ministry of Education and Sports Gender Unit funded to train teachers, Senior Women and Men in sanitary towels and MHM management.
